About this video: This video is our complete guide on how to play with friends in Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.2. We will go over four different ways to play Minecraft with your friends. This means that no matter what you will be able to find the perfect option for playing multiplayer in Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.2.
The first way to play Minecraft Java with your friends is using a public Minecraft server. There are thousands of public Minecraft 1.20.2 servers out that. With these server, you and your friends will all join the server, find each other on the server and play together. There are tons of different kinds of public Minecraft servers from survival servers to minigames servers to skyblock servers, and so much more.
We have a link in the description above to 1.20.2 survival servers if you want do want to play on a public server. In order to join a public server, open Minecraft and navigate to the “Multiplayer” tab. Click on “Add Server” and name the server. For the “Address” this will be the IP address of the server you are joining. Click Done and the server will be in the multiplayer menu. Double-click the server to join it.
One thing that is worth noting about public Minecraft server, is that you have no control over the worlds. You can’t add mods, and the server can shutdown with you losing all the builds and progress you have made on the server.
Luckily, if you don’t want to worry about losing your world or progress when playing Minecraft Java with your friends in 1.20.2, you can start a private Minecraft server. There are two ways to make a private server.
The easiest way to play multiplayer in Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.2 on a private server is using a hosting company. In this video, we recommend SimpleGameHosting, but there are tons of hosting companies you can use. With a high-quality hosting company, you can get a Minecraft server in minutes and get a similar experience to a public server.
The difference is you have full control over your world, can add mods, plugins, worlds, or make any other customizations to your server. You can also keep your world and download it even if you no longer want to host the server.

There are two other ways to play Minecraft 1.20.2 with your friends though. The first is using the Essential mod. We have a link to the Essential mod in the description above. Once you have it downloaded and installed, you can invite a friend and play Minecraft in your single-player world. This doesn’t allow for mods, and it is only meant for a few friends. However, it is a good way to let a friend see your singleplayer world.
Lastly, you can play Minecraft with your friends using LAN. This requires them to be on the same internet connection as you. Then, go into your singleplayer world, and open it to LAN from the pause menu. You friend can go to the multiplayer screen, and after a few seconds, your world will pop-up. From there, you can join it.
