Whether you want to just join a public server, start a server of your own to have full control, or just invite your friends to your existing singleplayer worlds, the options are endless.

First things first, the easiest way to play with friends on Minecraft Java Edition is by joining a public server. This is super simple and requires no downloads or anything. All you need is the IP address of the public Minecraft server that you want to join.

Then, go into your multiplayer menu in Minecraft Java Edition, add a server, and enter the IP address for the Name and the IP address boxes. When you save it, you will see the server and be able to double-click to join it. Your friends can also do this, and you will be able to play multiplayer in Minecraft Java Edition together on the server you choose. After public servers, you can create your own Minecraft server. There are two ways to this – on your own PC or by purchasing a server.

By creating a server on your own PC, you will be able to start a Minecraft server for free. You will have full control over the server. However, it is not meant to be public. Realms are another way to play Minecraft Java Edition with your friends. I would recommend against this and instead purchase a server through a host as that will give you much more control over the server.

Next up is LAN. Via LAN, you can allow anyone who is on the same wifi/internet connection as you to join your singleplayer worlds. This isn’t a permanent solution for most people, but it can be a great way to show off a singleplayer world.

Lastly, there is the Essential Mod. With this mod, you and your friend download it and add each other’s usernames. Then, you can invite them to your world in single player. This is a great way to play with friends in Minecraft Java Edition in a similar manor to Bedrock Edition.
